Apulia is a long, narrow wine region in Southern Italy, bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto to the south. Its southernmost area, known as the Salento peninsula, forms the heel of Italy’s boot
Sangiovese: Although not as widely planted as in other Italian regions, Sangiovese thrives in Apulia. It produces medium-bodied red wines with flavors of red cherries, herbs, and earthy notes.
Primitivo: Primitivo is a star grape in Apulia. It’s genetically related to California’s Zinfandel. Primitivo wines are rich, full-bodied, and often exhibit ripe blackberry, plum, and spice flavors.
Negroamaro: This native grape variety is prevalent in the Salento peninsula. Negroamaro yields robust, dark wines with hints of black fruit, licorice, and a touch of bitterness.
Trebbiano: Trebbiano is a white grape variety commonly grown in Apulia. It contributes to fresh, crisp white wines with citrus and floral aromas.
Apulia’s climate is Mediterranean, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. The sea breezes play a crucial role in moderating temperatures, especially along the coast. The Salento peninsula benefits from the cooling influence of both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining acidity.
Apulia has a rich winemaking heritage, deeply rooted in its Greco-Roman past. Historically, it produced vast quantities of blending wines, but in recent years, quality-focused winemakers have emerged. They’ve embraced modern techniques, reduced yields, and elevated winemaking practices. The region now boasts several DOCs (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) and even a DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) for its Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale.
Primitivo di Manduria: A DOCG wine made from the Primitivo grape, known for its sweet and intense flavors.
Castel del Monte: A DOC region producing red wines from the Nero di Troia grape.
Salice Salentino: A red wine made primarily from Negroamaro grapes.
Negroamaro del Salento: Another red wine showcasing the region’s indigenous grape.
Fiano di Avellino: A white wine made from the Fiano grape.
Aglianico del Vulture: A red wine from the Aglianico grape grown near Mount Vulture1.
