CALABRIA

Map of Calabria region

Location

A wine region effectively forming a large peninsula between the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is separated from Sicily by the narrow Strait of Messina, and its northern border with Basilicata is marked by the southern Apennine peaks1.
Located across the Strait of Messina from Sicily, Calabria is a largely rural region known for its warm Mediterranean climate and unique terroir

Grape Variety:

The region is best known for its production of red wines from the Gaglioppo grape

Climate:

Calabria’s climate is distinctly Mediterranean, with mild winters due to the proximity of the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. These seas help moderate temperatures during the summer months.
Rainfall is scarce, and irrigation is often necessary due to the mountainous terrain.

History:

Calabria has a rich history of winemaking influenced by ancient Greeks who cultivated the first wine-bearing vines here. For centuries, Calabrian wines were renowned not only in Italy but also in other European countries.
Unfortunately, competition from French regions like Bordeaux led to a decline in Calabria’s wine industry. The phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century further impacted vineyards.

Famous Wines:

The most famous DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) wine appellation in Calabria is Ciro. Ciro Rosso Riserva, a high-quality red wine, remains a significant reminder of Calabria’s winemaking potential.
