LOMBARDY

map of Lombardy

Location

Lombardy, nestled in north-central Italy, is a prominent wine region renowned for its diversity of wines. It stretches from the northern shores of the Mediterranean Sea to the peaks of the Alps in Switzerland1. While often associated with industrial urban life due to cities like Milan, Lombardy surprises with its breathtaking mountainous lakes, medieval towns, and hidden artisan wineries.

Grape Variety:

Franciacorta: The Franciacorta area is acclaimed for its luxurious sparkling wines. These elegant bubbles are made using the traditional method (Metodo Classico) and rival Champagne in quality. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc are the primary grape varieties used for Franciacorta production.

Valtellina: In the Valtellina region, you’ll find robust, complex red wines made from Nebbiolo grapes (locally known as Chiavennasca). These wines are reminiscent of the famous Barolo and Barbaresco from Piedmont.

Climate:

Lombardy’s climatic variations play a significant role in shaping its wines. The region experiences a mix of continental and Mediterranean climates. The western and southern shores of Lake Garda, the Franciacorta region, and Valtellina are particularly suitable for viticulture.

History:

Since Celtic and Roman times, vine culture in Lombardy has been native. The Roman poet Plinius mentioned wines from Oltrepò and Catullus praised the wines of Lake Garda. For centuries, Milan was the main buyer of wines from the surrounding areas. In the mid-20th century, sparkling wine production became increasingly important.

Famous Wines:

Franciacorta: Known for its high-quality sparkling wines, Franciacorta is a must-visit. The Castellini family produces excellent Franciacorta wines at Al Rocol.

Valtellina: Explore the Nebbiolo-based red wines of Valtellina, where tradition meets innovation.
